The Unwanted MCC Trike and Bike Custom Show – Review
Again this was a first for TTB, and we had been looking forward to this for some time,as the reputation of this event had preceded it as being a great little festival to be a part of. As usual it was held in the Rockbar on Shobnall Road which was opposite the Marston Sports and Social Club. This was significant as we had noticed that a Bon Jovi tribute band were playing the same night and were pretty much sold out and the fact it was TT week might have affected attendance at the Rockbar. But we need not have worried, although numbers seemed slightly down there were enough to go around.
Glen was the first to arrive shortly followed by myself, parking just outside the rear of the building at the stage entrance, soon followed by John and San, Mick and Kirsty and finally Mark, The chap manning the gate made a few exclamations on the number in the band, as we kept him busy for a while!!.
We popped in and had a chat with the sound guy, who had pretty much got his pretty impressive rig set up already. The room was long and thin with the bar positioned at the main entrance on one side. The stage was at the other end of the room and stretched right across the room with a decent sized dance floor in front. Access to the stage was via the rear emergency entrance, allowing for ideal transfer of kit onto the stage. A curtain was provided for pulling across once all had set up. There were plenty of power outlets and a festoon of effects and lights around the stage and progressing into the main room. A television screen was set near the bar area, showing the stage area, which allowed those at the back to see what’s going on.
As usual we were set up in good time, laying the miles of cabling we had got used to untangling over the years, always having to battle the cable gremlins who seem to delight in tying them in knots at every opportunity, no matter how careful you are when you pack them away. John had to make a quick mercy dash back home to pick up an essential bit of drum kit which had managed to separate itself, before returning for a bit of a sound check and we were ready to go – so we all took a bit of a break to have a look around and get a couple of drinks in.
Just before we were due to kick off we bumped into our good friend Lynn Fearn of Rockers Reunited fame, who had said she would be popping down, and after a few Lynney hugs and a comment or two about the effects of ultraviolet lights on the white of your clothing, takes me right back to the 70 tees, whilst head banging to Black Dog way back in my youth.
By the time we were ready to get going, quite a crowd had gathered, sporting a range of multi coloured wigs and some sporting their favoured air guitars. Anyway I reckon one or two drinks might have been consumed and they certainly were ready for a good night.
We kicked off with our usual start, amongst the ample smoke generated by the smoke machine, which showed just how impressive the light show at the Rockbar really is. We soon had people dancing and playing along with their air guitars, they were note perfect and had all the right poses in the right places.
As usual I popped into the crowd during Rosie and joined the Quo like air guitarists on the dance floor, one young lady was very enthusiastic and obliged with some vigorous twerking of the like I’d never experienced before, but after careful consideration it gets my vote. Give a whole new meaning to playing a Bum note, tee hee.
We seemed to be going down well and as I let the chap play the Gibson and then posed as instructed by the insistent paparazzi for photo’s, whilst relaxing on the bench seat and trying to catch the changeover to Rock & Roll. By the way guys, we’d all love to see any pics you may have of the night.
We kept on pumping and had the crowd dancing and cheering for most of the night, an A1 bunch of people. The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic and the Rock Bar Rocks its socks off, what a venue. A great bunch of people who really know how to have a good time, love it. Thanks to Ruth Lewis for inviting us down and hope we will have a chance to do it all again in the future.
After we had packed up our gear and given our thanks to all that had helped, Mick and John had to get off, so Mark, Glen and myself made a beeline for the burger bar, who were really great and kicked off the burners again so we could have a jumbo hot dog each, mmmm yummy, giving us time to sit in the shadows and reflect what had just happened, whilst the party was still ringing out from within the club. ‘Appy Dayz.
