The George & Dragon – Review
Yippee, it was Friday night again and the un-caped crusaders were heading out to the Derbyshire Dales once again to the picturesque town of Ashbourne, reknowned for its bone crunching and eye poking game of footy which involves as many people as you can muster on each team. TTB was on it’s way to The George and Dragon, armed with their axes and batons to slay them pesky dragons with some ear bursting rock.
We all knew not to get there too early as the foodie part of the evening usually goes on to about 8.30pm, so I aimed for about an 8.15 arrival, only to discover that the car park was packed solid, nowhere to park so circled the perimeter for 10 minutes or so until someone left a convenient space.
The George and Dragon does not have it’s own parking, although there is a pay and display car park immediately in front of the venue, on the market place. the payments for parking have improved recently. A while back you would have to pay till 9pm and then pay again to cover till finish. Now it’s just a quid from 6pm to 8am – a lot simpler.
As we waited for the diners to finish all the guys turned up and enjoyed the parking game too, some getting a hole in one, others not so fortunate, but eventually we all settled in for the long wait. By about 8.40 we were able to start loading in the kit, although there were one or two still encroaching on the playing area which made it a bit awkward getting past and setting up, meaning that with all our enthusiasm we managed to have all ready for just before 10pm.
After a short catching of breath we were ready to go. As usual the bar was starting to fill, for some strange reason folk seem to arrive after 10, but it’s always been that way at The George. We were pleased to see that Richard and Alice from Big Lix & Breaking Point fame had popped in to see us and unexpectedly the good looking trio from Steel Threads, Neil, Laura and Tracey had taken time out from their extremely busy schedule to come and see us play, much appreciated guys.
Anyway off we trot, doing our usual thing and all is going great, then boing, my D string gone for a burton on trent. So a quick guitar change and sorted, then crackle pop, transmitter failure – not my day – a quick fart around and return to the trusty cable method and all was well again, (don’t think too many noticed!).
We had a great time and we ended up playing to a great crowd who all seemed to be enjoying themselves, and a big shout out to Sue and Denise (the “two random women”) who had a great time, you’ll have to come out again Denise when we’re back at the end of October.
We played on and rocked it out, aided by the handy clip on fan that I’d just purchased from Home Bargains, that is when Glen wasn’t trying to nick it’s breezy delights. A great night, thanks to everyone who came down and made it such a success.
