Smithys’ Marina Bar – Review

Ok.  Last Saturday night saw us all heading down to good old Smithy’s for what we hoped would be a good Un.    I got there first with Ruth and the first thing we noticed was that the car park was full to the brim, leaving just one space.  So we bagged it and popped in for a drink while we waited for the rest of the mob to arrive.  Inside there was a good crowd in residence,  mainly due to the wedding party that was in full flow.  Outside was equally as busy but we managed to grab a bench and settled down to some suppin’.

The rest of the guys soon turned up,  Glen first around the same time that Adam turned up in his antique Morris.  After suitable meets and greets we got down to setting up.  The Marina bar has all the kit in place with drums, pa, backline, and lights you could just turn up and play, however we like to do a pick and mix and added our own pa, amp heads and supplemented some lighting.  I know it’s  a bit anal but we kinda like the sound we get from our own gear.

More people were turning up by now, thanks to Andy,  Big Steve (from the Bo’s), Ady and Laura and all the others who came down to support us.

Part way through the first set we launched into our for one night only number – Parisienne Walkways – which was requested a couple of weeks ago by the wedding couple, Mr and Mrs Graham and Alison  Stokes.  This lead to us frantically learning the song and playing it together on the night for the first time.  I think we managed to pull it off.

The  rest of the night went down a storm and all seemed to be having a good time.  We had a fantastic time and yet again a great night of music at this popular venue.
