The George & Dragon – Gig Review

We really looked forward to our return to the George & Dragon after our successful debut there in January, but we hadn’t reckoned on the good old British weather doing it’s worst. We were all faced with the long drive to Ashbourne in quickly deteriorating conditions, in fact a couple of the guys had near misses sliding about in the snow (where’s the gritters when you need them). As it happens we all got there in one piece and knuckled down to set up for our show, at this point it was ominously quiet in the Dragon and we were starting to think the weather would keep people at home and, I have to admit, the thought of driving home through deepening snow was never far from our thoughts. Our vocalist Mick and wife Kirsty were offered a room at the pub for the night and he almost accepted until he realised he’d have to pay for it, soon changed his mind.

It was nice to hear that a number of people had called The Dragon throughout the day to check we were still on in spite of the weather, so we were pleased we didn’t let anyone down. Shortly after we began our first set the place started to fill up and eventually became quiet busy, certainly our host and landlord, Ray, said he was more than happy with the turn out. We always put a lot into our two sets and we did our best to send everyone out into the snow with a warm glow, there’s now’t like a bit of AC/DC to keep the cold out. Thanks to everyone at the Dragon for your support and to our travelling army, also thanks Ray for giving us some more gigs.

Post gig and it’s 45 minutes past midnight by the time we were all packed and ready to hit the road in a convoy of 5 cars. The snow had been falling for many hours now and it’s fair to say it had settled very well, we watched as several cars struggled for grip trying to exit the Ashbourne market car park before it was our turn, we all made it and commenced the long drive home in perilous driving conditions arriving home at something after 2:00am, one of the joys of playing in a band.
