The Mile – Review

Tick Tick Boom has not played The Mile in Derby with it’s current line up,  and we weren’t sure what to expect being in the student quarter and having had a somewhat fragmented history with regard to live music.

The first thing we had to overcome was the parking,  some of the guys parked on the pavement to offload the gear whilst others lugged it some distance from the street parking around the corner.

Inside the playing area was on a raised platform with 4 steps up, which made the band well above the punters.  Some chaps had settled themselves in for a few drinks on the playing area, so like the George the night before we were in for another wait until they had finished before we could move all our kit, now sprawled over a wide area of the bar.  So we retired to the beer garden and had a drink and a fag until we were given the all clear.

The stage area was large and after doing a bit of furniture removals we could set up, soon having it all in place and ready to go.   There were quite a few punters in, but we did notice they were coming and going,  the Mile seems to be a bit of a transit pub, where people are moving towards the city centre clubs, popping in on the way.

We were quite excited about using our new bass bins on the PA for the first time, having upgraded to 15″ examples to give us more lower end and improved output.   When we fired them up,  wow, what a sound, seems our investment had paid off.

We got off to a strong start as usual and were really liking our sound,  unfortunately a few guys had sat down right in front of our new 15″ monsters for a burger and chips, which kinda shocked them,  and they soon moved away, sorry guys.

A group of lads were gathered to celebrate a 25th reunion and were certainly enjoying what The Mile had to offer as refreshment, and directly in front of the band a group of younger people had gathered.

As we played we noticed that the transient nature of this venue was continuing,  some going, some coming, but thanks to those who stayed and made it into a great night, and our good friend Ted who came down to see us.

By the second set, they were all dancing and a singing,  shirts came off and bodies were flying about the stage steps.  The younger group were also joining in and having a great time.  It’s good to see the younger generation discovering and continuing to appreciate great rock music.

After a few selfies with the girls, we wound up and packed up –  a big thanks goes out to all who made it the night it was,  and thanks guys for your invite to the all night party,  but our Horlicks and hot water bottles were calling- just kidding.  And a big thanks to Martin and Megan for your great feedback and kind words,  hope to see you again soon.
