Marstons Sports and Social club – Review

Well what a weekend for TTB,  our first visit to the Marstons Club and we were hoping for a good crowd, judging from the Event responses on Facebook, we should at least get a reasonable crowd in.

Turning up as usual, me being first to arrive, the rain was quite heavy and one or two of us got a bit lost by relying on our dodgy sat navs for directions,  never the less we all finally got there and checked out the playing area.  The room was pretty large, with the bar at one end and a purpose built stage at  the other,  with tables and chairs surrounding a large dance floor sporting a pretty substantial  disco ball.  Two banks of sound activated lighting illuminated the stage and the dance floor, and a dressing room was provided for Glen to do his hair and eat his blue M&Ms.

John was happy, until he realised that the stage was not actually his personal drum riser and he would have to share it with the rest of us.

Above the stage there was a strong wire strung from wall to wall, put there to hang those pretty awesome  backdrops that major bands seem to sport these days.  We however used our own backdrop stand, as we could not reach the wire, although the steward did say a step ladder was available, we thought it best to keep it easy.

Once we had got all our kit set up and done a quick sound check, we popped out to the smoking area for a fag or two and a chat with some of the punters.

By now a fair few had arrived and were starting to fill up the place, which I might add takes some filling,   most of the chairs and tables around the dance floor were now occupied, with quite a few familiar faces amongst them.  At the peak we counted around some 100 people, which is not so bad for a Friday night,  although the room could have taken a lot more.

We cracked off and the sound was good, running through the set, now revamped and new songs added,  everything was going fine, just one little blip on the turnaround from Whole Lotta Rosie to Rock and Roll.   Half way through Rosie the vocals seemed to change as Harry had been handed the microphone from Mick and he launched into his ACDC mode, great fun,  we always like to mix it up a bit.

We rounded off with our usual encore call and finished on a high.  This is a great music venue with the capacity to put on some major gigs, the Steward and all the organiser, Nolan were well happy and  said they would book us again in the future, maybe we could sort out a big backdrop by then,  anyway thanks to all who came down, we had a great time and hope you all did too.
