The Drum And Monkey – Review

Saturday night and we were off again straight off the back of our Marstons Club gig,  with tinnitus still ringing in our ears we were pulling into the Drum and Monkey car park.  Another first for us we didn’t know what to expect, but were hopeful for a good turnout.

The playing area was at one end of the bar,  in front of the large telly.  It was of a good size and provided plenty of room to set up and spread out, facing down the long room of the pub with the bar to the right and a rather large pillar facing you.  Ther e were 2 sockets available, one on the pillar powering a fruit machine and the other to the right of stage powering the telly.  This required a long extension lead to get power to the playing area, but was achieved without too much difficulty.

We received a warm welcome from Di (landlady) and and there were a few patrons already in situ observing us as we set up.  We soon got set up and ran through the sound check and were ready to go.   Tonight was also Mick’s birthday, so he had a no drive pass and could have a couple of drinks, which might prove interesting.

Whilst outside we notice more and more arriving, some on foot, some in cars and some by Taxi, and before you could say blimey O’riley the place was packed – heh heh here we go -this is gonna be a good one.

We set off with plenty of smoke and you guessed it, the alarm went off, another one to add to the list,  we must get a smoke alarm sounding gadget for the effect, it’s great.

The set went well and we actually managed to  get all the changes right tonight.  The crowd was great cheering and whistling between songs, let by our good friend Ken and Gypsy,  Helen was also there and Paul and his missus who were all having a blast as were we.

Mick was thrown some white shreddies with a birthday wish on it, which he promptly put on over his jeans,  was it a plane, was it a bird, no it’s Super Mick.  I think he enjoyed it a bit too much, I’m now wondering what he gets up to behind closed doors – naaah sure not, then maybe. Hmmm

The Drum and Monkey is a great venue and we have been booked for 3 more appearances next year and are looking forward to those,  I would recommend this place if your looking for a great night out.
