The Gate Inn @ NYE- Review
Well there’s been a long build up for the New Years Eve bash at The Gate Inn, Branston and we have all been looking forward to this one. We were sure there would be a good turnout and we were not wrong, the place was a buzzin’ with lots of our regulars turning up and a few new faces too.
I was coming down in the Hearse, as not having a drink I was the only one who could ferry the father in law and guests x 5 home at the end of the night, it’s the burden I’m happy to bear, especially when I have my ready made roady crew to help shift all the gear.
We were all warmly welcomed by Graham and began to set up, Glen had decided that a double stack of bass speakers were the order of the day, as they would match his new Thunderbird Bass guitar which he was bringing out for the first time in anger, lovely machine, would recommend it to any aspiring bass players out there.
We soon had things set up with the additions of a few seasonal messages strewn about. A few tweaks to the sound system and we were ready to go. The Gate was now full of revellers and we were raring to go. The beer was flowing, although there was a blip on the ale front, when there was only Hobgoblin and Pedi on offer, giving Ruth and the father in law a cause for concern, until Graham came to the rescue and produced bottles of Old Peculiur and a nice London Porter from the cellar, all was now well with the world so we could move on.
Our good old friends, Harry and Pippa, Steve and Chink, and not forgetting Gypsy and Kenny as well as many others to many to mention, thanks to you all for coming down. It was also great to see San , Johns missus, hoping to see you a lot more in the new year.
We cracked off in our normal manner and it was soon clear that everyone was in the mood all singing along and a dancing in jovial merriment. we were all in high spirits and the ale was a-flowing. In the second set we invited Harry and Steve to do a stint on Whole Lotta Rosie and Rock and Roll, and they did a great job – although I wasn’t quite sure what that move was on Mick from behind by Harry! but I’m sure it was innocent enough, anyway, the whole place was getting involved and singing along.
Glen and I took the opportunity to introduce a small snippet of Uriah Heep, in the form of the first verse of Stealin’ which we had not rehearsed or even considered beforehand, but we like to have a bit of fun when it’s all going well.
We played on to just before midnight where we linked up to the radio and got the BBC countdown, Sorry Graham about the mess, as we dished out some 300 or so party poppers which went with lots of little bangs, you just gotta haven’t ya.
After we had all kissed each other and had the odd grope or two we were back on to finish off with a half a dozen numbers, which turned into another set, finishing at just before 1 am. Phew we were knackered but it was well worth it. The Gate is a great venue and we know we’ll be back, so keep buckled up for our return.
