The Genny B – Review

For those of you who do not know the Generous Briton (Genny B) in Melton Mowbray,  well let me say that I reckon you are missing out on something really special.   It’s a bit of a drive but boy do they know how to have a rocking good time.

I gave Glen a lift with his gear and brought along a couple of groupies for good measure, yes ok I know I was married to one of ’em and the other thinks I should do as she tells me, like some honorary wife,  but it all adds to the atmosphere and it’s great when they double up as my unpaid roadies.

So Glen and I arrived first and popped in to case the joint.  On entering we noticed there were not many in, a few lads and lasses at the bar having a chuckle and the Landlord Mike,  who immediately came over and introduced himself with a warm and friendly smile, showing us where the sockets were, facilities, lights and timings etc.  This was a great touch, and something we were not used too.  We immediately felt at home.

The Genny B has quite a large open room, with a strategic but not too intrusive pillar in the centre of the room holding the rest of the building up on a beam traversing the whole pub, complete with music logo’s and graffiti.   The playing area was in the form of a shallow stage just right of the main entrance, a good space with plenty of room for a 5 piece and having plenty of in house sound activated lights around it.  Power was provided by a single 13 amp socket to stage left and a double socket on the back wall stage right,  more than enough for a juice sappin rock outfit.  Looking out from the stage the bar was on the right, all tables had been set aside to make room for the punters and the rear wall was festooned with rock star posters which made us feel at home.   The Genny welcome gets a 10 from me.

The event had been well publicised and posters were about the place.

The rest of us had by now arrived and we were setting up as usual,  noticing a steady stream of punters coming in and beginning to fill the place,  we did notice that the age group was somewhat younger than we had expected and did wonder if our kinda music would go down well,  although the Genny was renowned for liking it’s rock so maybe nothing to worry about.

We were asked to start at 10 pm so had plenty of time to get everything right, which was just as well as the left bass bin had packed in again, despite Mick loving attention with his soldering iron over the previous week.  After a few attempts Mick got to the bottom of it and found yet another dodgy solder, which he facilitated a temporary fix with a bit o chewing gum an a old fuse.  Oh the trials of a gigging band.

All sorted we got on with the sound check and all was well.  By now quite a few more had arrived and their was now more of a representative mix of people, including a scattering rocky looking dudes.

So we cracked off with the start and usual double number and when we stopped we waited for the tell tale response, and sure enough, claps and cheers from the start,   thanks guys, this always helps with our confidence and puts us at ease to give a good performance.   In fact the Genny B gave us one of our best welcomes we have had for some time.

As we went on it just went from strength to strength,  more people arriving and dancing, singing along and cheering pretty much through the whole set, and the majority being the younger ones that were clearly loving their rock,  some very interesting dance moves ladies, you know who you are!  anyway  you were having a great time which meant that so were we.   A big thanks go out to the punters of the Genny B,  I can honestly say that you rock, all of you and The BOOM !  can’t wait to come back and do it again.   See you all soon.
