The Stumble Inn – Review
Here we go again, off to the Stumble in Long Eaton to deliver a great night of Rock music. We got there to an already buzzing pub although we were surprised to find that the playing area had shrank quite a bit with the addition of a bench seat complete with two nice ladies situated where the PA and Mark would normally be. A quick chat to the landlord and the problem was solved, said bench was evicted to the cellar room, meaning that Glen and Steve had to move all their gear to make way, but hey ho. Sorry to the lasses that had to give up their seats but it might have got a bit cramped and damp with Mark sweating all over you – horrible!!
There has been a couple of gigs where we had set off the fire alarms with our smoke machine, luckily Mick remembered and hastily took preventative action with the help of a Tesco’s plastic bag and a length of duck tape. The show could now go on without random sirens dubbing over.
The place was filling up fast and we welcomed a lot of our regulars and a few new faces – thanks to Nick & Gillian, Jethro and Debs, Laura and Ady, Steve & Sue and all their pals for coming down.
The Beer in the Stumble was excellent (according to Ruth), they have there own Micro Brewery (Songbird Brewery) run by the Landlord’s Daughter and she really knows how to mash a great brew. Mild Thing, was Ruth’s choice but there was plenty of other great beers on offer – great place for the real ale brigade.
After a bit of tweaking to Steve’s amp and a problem with Marks foot switch, which required swapping with Steve’s switch only to discover that the little button on Mark’s amp needed depressing – problem solved, we cracked off with our Perfect Strangers TTB style start, breaking straight into Don’t Believe a Word and Breaking the Law. Wow, the crowd erupted with cheers and applause – this was going to be a great night, we could all sense it in our bones. Throughout the performance Laura kept coming to the front declaring her love for Steve so during Feel Like Making Love he directed his gaze directly at her, to catch her out, much to her delight, unfortunately Steve’s wife Ruth was not amused and strutted off outside, closely followed by Steve – Still playing – while he pleaded for forgiveness and grovelled a bit, where he discovers it was all a ruse cooked up by the girls – Steve new really and thought it would be fun to go along with it. Returning stage left to continue where he left off.
There must be something in the air because shortly after Glen disappears outside by the rear exit, only to return shortly afterwards = it appears he intended to pop out and come in the front entrance, but when he got outside he got lost and couldn’t figure out how to get around the building and so he just came back.
More and More came until the place was packed out with many strutting and head banging along to our driving tones, by the break we were all exhausted having put everything into our performance, feeding off the frenzied mob.
During the interval we were approached by a guy who wanted to book us for a private Summer party, as we play the exact type of music him and all his mates love (his words) – always happy to oblige.
Kicking off the second set with T-Rex 20th Century Boy we turned up the tempo, the place was soon rocking it’s socks off again, but by now they were on the tables and Steve went out to join all the ladies dancing to Whole Lotta Rosie, taking advantage of the wireless system he had borrowed from Glen to try out – PS he has now ordered his own so you might see more of him close up in future gigs.
We finished off with Dakota, but this was not enough for the hungry crowd, they just would not let us go, so we had to bring every last song out of our arsenal and delivered Run to the Hills and finally finishing on our old favourite Beastie boys, Fight for Your Right – gets ’em singing along every time.
By the end of the evening we were all totally exhausted and retired outside to recover, cool down and have a fag. Steve went round handing out our promotional TTB Badges which are always well received, many of the women wanted him to pin them on for them, in that obvious place, which could be dangerous, especially if any implants are involved.
Great night, looking forward to our return – if only all gigs were like this.
